Within a context of market globalisation, the quality of products is a key factor for success in manufacturing industry. At the same time, the increasing interest in sustainable production places a premium on reducing material waste, re-works, rejects and stocks and has led to a demand for the development of zero-defect strategies at system level.
The GO0D MAN project – Agent oriented zero defect multi-stage manufacturing
Traditional approaches for quality control treat the production system as a whole and lack the capability to discriminate among changes at different stages. This means that the large amount of data generated or used in a production system, is not efficiently processed.
In this context, the strategy developed by the GO0D MAN project will be able to manage the production in an advanced way, involving Big Data as the key element for an efficient and zero defects manufacturing (ZDM) process.
The ultimate goal is to develop a production strategy that can guarantee high quality of products without interfering, actually improving, the production efficiency of the entire system.
GO0D MAN is an Innovation Action of Horizon 2020 programme and is based on the results achieved in other European Research Projects developed in recent years, such as GRACE, IDEAS and Self-Learning, which addressed the issue of zero-defect production at feasibility and prototyping level.
Big Data and Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM)
The “Zero Defect Manufacturing” (ZDM) strategy, developed within the GO0D MAN project, is based on multi-agent systems and will play a key role to implement the distributed infrastructure able to collect, monitor and process data, in local and global levels, supporting the execution of different types of advanced data analytics algorithms.
The real time and early identification of deviations and trends, performed in each quality control stations of a multi-stage production line, allows to prevent the generation of defects at single stage and their propagation to down-stream processes, enabling the global system to be predictive (early detection of process faults) and proactive (self-adaptation to different conditions).
Effective use of such large amount of data is the key enabling factor for the successful achievement of ZDM strategy. Data analysis, in order to extract knowledge, will impact on product quality, waste and scraps reduction, energy efficiency and production rate and cost, in line with ZDM policies. Furthermore, the use of the overall information will permit build-up of knowledge extremely relevant for a continuous process improvement according to quality policies.
The future of the work is more and more knowledge, and less and less factory
Industry 4.0 and Big Data, zero defects in production line and high quality of production, factory of the future and maximum production efficiency. These are the issues addressed by GO0D MAN project, riding on the new paradigms of the industry and of knowledge: in a world in which the new industrial revolution walks side by side with the new digital revolution, the future of the work is more and more knowledge, and less and less factory.
